Plan waste collection alongside the rest of your construction or renovation work. Knowing where debris will go helps keep work areas and access routes clear.
1. Estimate the waste
List the main materials being removed: concrete, tiles, timber, fittings or packaging. Note when each stage will produce waste so you can discuss delivery and exchanges with the bin supplier.
2. Confirm placement and permissions
Check with building management and the relevant local council before placing a bin. Requirements depend on the location and whether the bin will occupy private land, parking, a verge or a public area.
Confirm the approved position, access hours and any requirements for vehicle entry. Do not assume that a roadside space is available for a bin.
3. Choose a suitable bin
The bin size and loading limit depend on the materials, amount and truck access. Dense rubble needs particular attention to weight. Our bin size guide explains the available options.
4. Keep unsuitable materials separate
Asbestos, chemicals, oils, batteries, gas cylinders, contaminated soil and clinical waste do not belong in a general construction waste bin. Confirm suitable handling arrangements separately. If an old board, container or material is unidentified, ask before loading it.
5. Plan exchanges
Nominate a site contact to monitor the bin and arrange collection. Give notice when another bin will be needed, particularly during demolition and strip-out. Confirm availability instead of assuming a same-day exchange.
6. Include final clearance
Allow for packaging, offcuts and leftover materials at the end of the project. Check that loading areas and shared spaces are clear before handover.
